Protecting Elections in North Carolina

Overview
Protect Democracy advocated for the adoption of a secure, modern voting system in North Carolina ahead of the 2020 elections. Before 2020, one-third of NC voters used obsolete, insecure Direct Recording Electronic (DRE) voting machines each time they vote. We called on on the state to immediately cease the use of these machines before this critical election, and to certify only modern, auditable voting systems for future use in North Carolina. In August 2019, the North Carolina State Board of Elections voted to require counties to use only voting systems that produced a paper ballot.
