As Americans, we have strong tools rooted in our Constitution and system of checks and balances to prevent our democracy from declining into a more authoritarian form of government. With experience upholding the guardrails of democracy in the American government, and working with experts who study the rise and fall of democracies around the world, we’ve identified key areas of risk that need our immediate attention.

Below is what we’ve done to protect our democracy in each of those key areas:

Executive Power Grabs

A strong democracy depends upon the separation of powers within government. When the system works properly, the legislature and courts prevent the executive branch from amassing too much power. This balance has shifted in recent years, with Congress abdicating its role and President Trump undermining checks and balances by attacking the judiciary, withholding information from Congress, and punishing states that opposed his policies. We work to maintain a strong separation of powers and fight executive power grabs.
