Statement on the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act
- January 18, 2022
We commend the Senate for taking up the Freedom to Vote: John R. Lewis Act. As members of a body that prides itself on being deliberative, it’s imperative for Senators to do their jobs and let the American people know where they stand on protecting the freedom to vote and the right to have your vote counted—the cornerstones of our democracy.Â
American democracy is in decline. Fueled by disinformation and false claims about widespread fraud in the 2020 presidential election, state legislatures have enacted a wave of new restrictions on voting access as well as unprecedented measures that would allow for partisan interference in election administration.Â
The Senate must act to ensure that we can safely and freely cast our ballots, and get voting rights legislation across the finish line.
It can happen here.
We can stop it.
Defeating authoritarianism is going to take all of us. Everyone and every institution has a role to play. Together, we can protect democracy.
