Understanding Americans’ Views about January 6 to Help Foster Accountability & Prevent A Recurrence
- June 8, 2022
On January 6, 2021, while Congress was counting the Electoral College votes from the 2020 election, a violent mob broke into the very seat of our democracy and disrupted the peaceful transfer of power in a direct attack on our shared American values.
Protect Democracy’s work in support of a thorough and transparent investigation of the events that led up to, and on, January 6, 2021 is aimed at both assuring accountability for those who planned and participated in that campaign to overturn the election that turned violent, and preventing it from ever repeating.
Critical to both accountability and assuring non-recurrence is a shared understanding of what occurred, a challenge in our highly polarized moment. In partnership with OverZero and New America, we sought to better understand Americans’ views in order to help foster a healthy and cross-partisan dialogue about the unprecedented attack on our institutions and democracy that January 6 represents.
