Protect Democracy’s Anne Tindall testifies before Congress on improving congressional oversight

Anne Tindall, counsel at Protect Democracy, testified before the House Select Committee on the Modernization of Congress on ways to enhance the institution’s capacity for effective oversight of the Executive Branch.

“Despite the challenges Congress faces in strengthening its oversight capacity, lawmakers have a number of options… to ensure that the Article I branch of government reclaims its position as a meaningful check on executive power,” said Anne Tindall.

In her testimony, Ms. Tindall discusses methods for modernizing Congress’s contempt power to improve compliance with its subpoenas; encourages the committee to continue assessing the value of a congressional Office of Legal Counsel; and recommends that the House adopt more efficient approaches for congressional staff to access sensitive material in the course of their oversight work.
