Protect Democracy Statement On the Need for Congressional Action to Both Protect Voting Rights and Secure Our Elections
- January 5, 2022
Protecting our democracy requires urgent action on several fronts. When it comes to free and fair elections – the cornerstone of a healthy democracy – we need to reject the false choice, suggested in recent media coverage, between protecting voting rights and protecting the integrity of our elections. Congress can and should take action to secure our elections at all stages, by passing the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and Freedom to Vote Act to address racial inequities in voting access, protect election officials and other election infrastructure, and guard against state-level election subversion, while also addressing a critical vulnerability in presidential elections by updating the Electoral Count Act.
It can happen here.
We can stop it.
Defeating authoritarianism is going to take all of us. Everyone and every institution has a role to play. Together, we can protect democracy.
