Washington, DC—Protect Democracy applauds the House introduction of the Protecting Election Administration from Interference Act, sponsored by Representative Colin Allred joined by Representatives Sarbanes, Veasey, Escobar and Slotkin. This legislation would help promote Americans’ participation in free and fair elections across our country, by serving as a critical bulwark against potential election subversion.

Election subversion efforts—namely, threats by partisan actors to change or overturn the results of free and fair elections if they do not like the results—have been proliferating at the state level. As documented in A Democracy Crisis in the Making, a recent report from Protect Democracy, States United Democracy Center, and Law Forward, legislatures have introduced more than 200 bills that would enable election subversion. Such dangerous, anti-democratic tools threaten the integrity of our democracy, and cannot be allowed to undermine the will of the voters.

Passing this legislation would be an important step towards ensuring that American voters can have confidence that their elections will be administered fairly, transparently, and free from partisan interference.
