Nonprofit organizations are increasingly under
threat from government officials who seek to score political points and silence checks on their own power.

This toolkit offers best practices for responding to politicized
government investigations so that organizations can keep doing
lawful, mission-based work.

How we defend democracy

We’re making real progress in the fight
against authoritarianism.

Using litigation, technology, and advocacy, we’re addressing the crisis of democracy we face today even as we push for long-term reforms to make it stronger tomorrow.

Protect Democracy currently has five defamation suits on the go against individuals and outlets who propagated election denial… The lawsuits are designed in part as a strategy of deterrence… Already the legal pain is mounting.”

Ed Pilkington, Chief U.S. Reporter, The Guardian

Protect Democracy is pro-rule-of-law.
If in your mind that’s [partisan or] anti-
Trump, that says a lot.”

GEORGE CONWAY, CONSERVATIVE ATTORNEY AND STAFF WRITER AT THE ATLANTIC

These folks are worth their
weight in gold.”

A closer look

Scholarship on PR focuses overwhelmingly on using it to elect national and subnational legislatures (variously known as assemblies, parliaments, congresses, etc.). When we draw from that scholarship to discuss prospects for PR in the United States, we are thinking about how PR would affect elections and representation in the U.S. House of Representatives and in the state legislatures. There are no constitutional impediments to PR in these contexts, so electoral reforms could be adopted by statute. But of course, the U.S. political environment is populated by other key actors as well, most notably the presidency and the U.S. Senate, both of which are constitutionally bound to election by winner-take-all methods.
