Foundations: Organizing

1. Foundational principles of organizing
Organizing is at the heart of a healthy democracy and is one of the strongest tools communities have to counter authoritarian tactics.
What is organizing?
There are a lot of definitions, but we like this one from Organizing Guide: People, Power, Change (a fantastic resource created by a coalition of leaders in this space):
“Organizing is leadership that enables people to turn the resources they have into the power they need to make the change they want.”
Understanding the fundamentals of organizing is the first step toward building collective power and strengthening civic engagement. These resources introduce the core ideas behind effective organizing — what it is, how it works, and why it’s powerful. They offer guidance on building relationships, identifying shared goals, and taking action together to create lasting change. Whether you’re new to organizing or looking to deepen your foundation, use these resources to learn how shared concerns can become collective action that protects democratic values and resists authoritarian threats.
For new organizers
As you will quickly learn exploring these guides, there are as many ways to be an organizer as there are organizers. More than anything, being an organizer is a way of thinking and acting. It’s a commitment to building community and other people’s leadership, pushing for action, and learning as you go. These resources will help you get started:
- People, Power, Change: Organizing for Democratic Renewal by Marshall Ganz – Ganz pulls together more than 60 years of experience organizing and teaching organizers into a book jam-packed with lessons, tactical advice, and inspiration. If you’re concerned about democracy and have no idea where to start, this is the book for you. We also recommend the audiobook (narrated by Ganz) – it’s perfect for an afternoon walk.
