NEW Protect Democracy Report — Democracy on Trial: The Role of Pennsylvania’s High Courts in 2024 and Beyond

Harrisburg, PA — A new report released today by Protect Democracy, Democracy on Trial: The Role of Pennsylvania’s High Courts in 2024 and Beyond, focuses on the stakes of Pennsylvania’s upcoming court elections for democracy in the US.

In November, Pennsylvania voters will be tasked with filling vacancies on both the Commonwealth Court and Supreme Court — elections that will shape the future of voting rights, gerrymandering, and election certification in a state that’s sure to be key to the 2024 presidential race. Democracy on Trial examines the role of the courts on these issues, with a focus on recent court decisions striking down challenges to a critical voting statute that facilitated over 2.6 million Pennsylvanians voting by mail in 2020.

As the report observes: the state’s court system has “has acted as a democratic bulwark, dealing with an unprecedented wave of litigation concerning democracy and elections in Pennsylvania. There is no sign that the trend is abating — and that raises the stakes for this year’s judicial elections.”
