A young person’s guide to protecting and participating in U.S. elections
The gen z election defense toolkit
Gen Z’s participation and confidence in U.S. elections are under threat. This by Gen Z, for Gen Z toolkit is designed to support youth-focused organizations taking action this election season.
This toolkit serves as a comprehensive roadmap for navigating the complexities of the modern election cycle, specifically designed to empower young voters and advocates, providing a robust collection of resources covering everything from voter safety and education to critical analysis of election integrity threats.
Rather than replacing existing efforts, this guide is built to fill information gaps and pair seamlessly with other Gen Z-focused democracy materials, acting as a non-partisan companion piece for pro-democracy organizations across the ideological spectrum.
Whether you need to distribute individual sections as standalone handouts, follow the chronological path from pre- to post-election day, or translate deep policy analysis into digestible social media content — the materials are easily adaptable.
If you’re a student organizer, a young leader of an organization, or are just ready to do your part in expanding young people’s participation in the electoral process, this toolkit is for you.

Protecting democracy is a generational effort
Protecting democracy is a generational effort — one that doesn’t begin or end with a single election. Each generation inherits the responsibility to strengthen, defend, and reimagine how our democracy works in practice. Young people have historically been at the forefront of democratic change, from the Civil Rights Movement to more recent movements like March for Our Lives. Across the country, students and youth in communities, workplaces, and online spaces are building a culture of participation by sharing reliable information, organizing, and creating systems that make civic engagement accessible and meaningful.
As the electorate changes, so does the opportunity to shape our democracy. Gen Z voters are increasingly influencing the direction of civic life, driven by the issues they care about, such as climate, racial justice, and economic equity, rather than political personalities. Their participation is already transforming conversations, raising expectations for responsive governance, and demonstrating that civic engagement is about more than just casting a ballot, it’s about building systems that work for everyone.
Protecting democracy requires ongoing engagement beyond Election Day. From understanding the post-election process to pushing back on misinformation and supporting transparent outcomes, young people are critical to ensuring that elections remain free, fair, and secure. By staying informed, supporting one another, and taking action in both small and large ways, each generation helps carry this work forward — strengthening a democracy that grows more resilient, responsive, and representative over time.
